Low Wray campsite is situated on the banks of Lake Windermere in the Lake District run by the National Trust. I have had so many problems with holidays so I contacted the camp beforehand, explained the whole situation about the children screaming in the day etc. The campsite were great they gave us a secluded pitch so we didn’t disturb anyone and vice versa, they took pictures of the pitch beforehand so that I could show the kids exactly where they were going to alleviate any anxiety.
When we arrived we were met with kind and friendly staff.
The pitches are well laid out the scenery surrounding the campsite is incredible. Our pitch was in the middle of the forest surrounding by woods. It was very peaceful and serene, great to just chill outside. Something that we haven’t been able to do on previous holidays as the kids get upset with people staring at them. For the first time in years we were able to just be ourselves on holiday and not on tender hooks all the time. Do you know what it felt really good !!.
This was the first time we had been wild camping no electric hook-up, we normally go Glamping and have the luxury of electric hook-up so the kids could take the ipads etc. It was great to get back to basics and see the kids having fun and exploring their surroundings. Zak overcame so many sensory issues as he began to gain his confidence and explore.
I did have a plan B for rainy days I took a portable dvd player so they could sit in the tent and watch their dvd’s. Our Vango Airbeam did us proud and kept us dry when we had 5 days of rain, because the tent is so big we were able to spread out and not feel like we were crowding each other.
The reception charged batteries for the dvd player for a small charge. The site itself was kept immaculately clean as were the toilets and showers. The site had lots of activities to offer but we never participated in any of them. Instead we went touring to such as Manchester, Blackpool, Yorkshire etc.
I want to thank Low Wray staff for making us so welcome, this was the first holiday my family felt happy and relaxed. I loved everything about the holiday especially the pitch and views that were just spectacular. Thank you for all your help. We look forward to returning to Low Wray next year.
I can highly recommend Low Wray campsite for a wonderful holiday especially if you have challenging children like mine. The outdoors is great there is so much to see and do. Even on rainy days we sat at the door of the tent watching the wildlife and the rain on the trees.
Now, I think I am a new convert to wild camping and would gladly go again. To be honest I didn’t miss the tv. The only think I really missed was the convenience of putting a kettle on instead of waiting for 15 minutes for the kettle to boil on the cooker.
